Visit to Fortini and Villa Sciarra

Forts - Villa Sciarra

Are centuries old and have been the scene of important pages, dramatic story of our Risorgimento: are the walls of the seventeenth century Gianicolo. These are the bastions of Villa Sciarra where, in June 1949, Garibaldi and his companions resisted a month before capitulate under the guns of the French came to put on the throne of the pope. The brick facing that embraces the green heart of Villa Sciarra was built by Urban VIII (1568-1644). And the marble coat of arms of Pope Barberini, the pope who built the tomb in St. Peter's by Bernini, are found in several places of the high wall. Then we set out on "Scala Righetto" - dedicated to populate fallen in defense of the Roman Republic - that cuts through the bends towards Villa Sciarra and climbs along the side of the Janiculum lawns, trees and unfortunately some residual bivouacs at night. By Fortini you have a beautiful view of Rome, albeit less high than Gianicolo but the peace with which you can enjoy, not interrupted by all sorts of vendors and abundantly repays the coaches. Forts, always been a favorite adolescents Monteverdinos (but not only these ...) in the vein of tenderness kept unchanged their charm, despite the partial collapse of the walls and the neglect of the different municipalities have occurred. Left behind redoubts and nice to walk to Villa Sciarra and maybe stopping to read one of the many benches. Fascinating panorama of Rome framed through the mouths of fire formed in the ramparts of the walls .. Once you visit, you can choose whether to make the journey back or walk down Via Dandolo directed towards the oldest part of the charming Trastevere district.

How you can reach:

From the "Rooms Sara" take Viale di Trastevere sidewalk right side towards Ponte Garibaldi:

Arrived at the Piazza Ippolito Nievo cross the road and continue in the direction of Ponte Garibaldi. Turn right onto Via Ugo Bassi and face the staircase that takes you straight to the Forts.

By Fortini continue on Via Ugo Bassi to Via delle Mura Gianicolensi where you'll find an entrance to Villa Sciarra. Enjoy your walk!
